Quintec Systems Limited
Managing Director, 1984 - 1991
Quintec Systems was founded in 1984 to develop and market a development system for
the artificial intelligence language Prolog. The product incorporated many
ideas new to the field at the time and was one of the first to combine a fast incremental
Prolog compiler with a rich graphical development environment.
In 1985, Quintec negotiated a joint venture marketing arrangement with Systems Designers
plc (now EDS-Scicon). Systems Designers successfully marketed the product in the
UK, Europe and USA under licence as 'SD-Prolog'.
In Quintec negotiated a venture capital deal with Sun Alliance. Over the next few
years significant venture funding for new product development was provided to Quintec
by Sun Alliance. In 1990 the marketing strategy of the company changed to offer
a combined solution including both software tools and training, consultancy and
bespoke development.
Although small ( 10 people ), Quintec Systems successfully developed advanced technology
products which competed head-to-head with the products of larger American corporations.
After 1991 the market for artificial intelligence products became very difficult
and the company decided to adopt a pure consultancy offering.
